Day 7 Ride Day 3 to Omarama

Breakfast at 8, ride starts at 9:15. I want to change my pedals to non-clip-in before we go. I had forgotten to print the luggage tags for the Princess Cruise, but I was able to get them printed from the desk at the hotel. Lovely sunrise from our room.

I was very anxious this morning because it was supposed to be 38° at 8:00 and 50° at 9:00 when we left. It felt cool but not really cold. I wore all my gear. Paul, the leader, gave us a pannier so we could put the clothes we're not wearing anymore as we strip as it gets warmer. We are used to road biking, not mountain biking. It was a difficult climb for us. Very rocky, ravines, and creeks to cross. It seemed very technical and I'm so glad I had the e-bike because we did a lot of climbing. Also, very glad I was not clipped in. Part of it was through a beautiful pine forest, but then we know they don't like them here.

The descent was just as perilous. But it was faster.

After we made the climb, Paul met us at the end of the descent, and gave us lunch.

Then we rode the rest of the way to town. Maybe 10K on gravel and another 10K on a road. We found a little kiosk that was an ice cream store that was just vending machines. We met three kids from the Netherlands, and a couple from the North Island of New Zealand.

We finally got to town and the directions to actually find our Airbnb were difficult, but the lady seems very nice. She's letting us use the washer. We selected our breakfast like a menu. Breakfast at 8 ride at 9.
We walked about a kilometer and found a restaurant. Paul ordered ribs and the plate was enormous! I had a nice grilled veggie salad.

  1. Beautiful countryside - and the food looks delicious.
I'm curious - why don't they like pine forests there?
